Who are we?

ABOUT US …

ME: (the writer, the dreamer, the wife, the mum)

Hi, I’m Robbie and I dig adventure! I absolutely love new places, I get a kick out of hard travel but I like a comfy bed, I love discovering new locals, be that playgrounds, temples, coffee studios or kid-friendly restaurants & adventures. I am, by nature, a social butterfly – I crave meeting and getting to know new people.

I love finding the perfect ‘play’ environment for my 2 kids and I also love Lychee Martinis!

I’m the one behind ‘8 Feets and Heartbeats’ so it’s my rants and mumblings and raves and tips that you’ll be reading, and hopefully following with interest and humor.

MY PROMISE TO YOU:

My intention is simple – I want to inspire you to travel with your children. Not to fall into the ‘oh so big’ category of people that allow children to be the REASONS WHY NOT to travel. I want you to be inspired to allow your kids to be ‘THE REASONS WHY!’

I want your kids to experience some of the wonders that only travel can give them, just as my 3 have experienced over the past 4 years. (no, that’s not a typo – I do have 3 kids. But more on that later!)

My intention is to, not only give you good reading material – entertainment – but also to help you to follow your dream of travelling as a family, be that a 2 week escape, or a never-ending journey. I want to blow the myth ‘outta the water’ that travelling with kids is difficult and sometimes even painful – cos I’m here to tell you that it’s NOT! It’s an amazing experience, on so many levels and I want to share that with you.

SO:

Please enjoy, and please feel free to connect with me by whatever means you’re comfortable with. Leave comments, I’d love to hear your thoughts, and why not subscribe to my email list so I can pop-up in your inbox every now and then.

NOW please let me introduce ‘THE OTHER 6 FEETS’

(my family, my fellow adventurers, my reasons)

LIAM holds the title of the husband and the ‘papa bear’.

We’re an Aussie family and Liam reflects that perfectly. Someone once said he’s ‘so laid back he’s almost asleep!’  With this he usually leaves the planning (and packing!) up to me but happily follows along with curiosity and a genuine love for adventure (that we thankfully share!) He loves surfing, and beach combing, he loves mountains and pushing physical boundaries and he loves standing still – for long lengths of time!

He’s a searcher, searching for the true meaning of life, and he’s always curious to dig a little deeper into the depths of his own psyche.

JED (a-bug) is our creative and very artistic 7 year old (3.5 when the adventures began). He LOVES to sing, and create scenes of his own movies in every way, shape and form, usually involving his little sister in the script somewhere. He plays the Gamelan and practices Aikido, and is damn good at both of them, and like most 7 yr olds his very first, and greatest love, is Lego. He has a genuine love of adventure and travel, and like his mum he’s a social being and loves to meet new friends wherever he’s living at the time.

Our 'toothless' pirate Jed!

DENI, warmly known as ‘Neni Noo or Pops’ is our gorgeous little 5 year old. She has lived abroad for as long as her sweet little mind can remember. She was toilet trained on squat toilets and can speak Bahasa Indonesia better than us, in fact she’s known to interpret for us on occasions! She has a heart of gold and an incredibly deep love and appreciation for nature and animals – of all shapes and sizes! She loves the outdoors, and just like her Dad she could quite easily spend weeks on end searching for seashells and ‘mystical sea-glass’ on some uninhabited beach somewhere on the coast of some uninhabited Island.

Hi, we’re The Smythies We’re a family of four on an adventure! We made the decision back in 2009 to change our path. We traded in our suburban life for 4 one-way tickets to ‘nowhere in particular’, and almost 4 years on we’re still living and travelling abroad! Come along for the ride and be inspired, be appalled, be humored or just be entertained! Read more here
